Trio of tragedies on Cavan’s roads

There were three road deaths in County Cavan in just over a week. Mr Aronik of Boggan, Moynalty, and native of Poland died following a collision involving a car and a parked truck on Friday, May 5. Mr Aronik, a father of one and lorry driver, was the sole occupant of the car involved in the crash on the R178 at Carrickgorman (Stonewall), near Bailieborough.

His death came just 24 hours after Colm Tully, Mullaghboy, Cootehill, who died Thursday, May 4, following a crash involving a car and a lorry on the N3 at New Inns, Ballyjamesduff. The 26-year-old plumber by trade was the driver of the car.

Their deaths occurred a little over a week after Aaron Keenan (22), a member of a well known family with businesses in Ardee, Co Louth, died following a motorcycle accident on the R165 at Cornakill outside Kingscourt on Wednesday, April 26.

There was more devastating news when talented sportsman Joseph ‘Joey’ Stewart (24) was killed in a single vehicle road traffic collision on the R147 Kells to Virginia Road on May 17. Originally from Kells and living in Virginia, Joey had played underage football for Gaeil Colmcille GAA in Kells and was an accomplished handballer too.

‘No stone will be left unturned’ – top cop

THE ongoing investigation into the Belturbet bombing saw dive teams trawl the murky waters of the Woodford River in the hope of dredging new information that could lead to a breakthrough in the 50-year-old cold case.

‘We hope lessons have been learned’

The McGorry family whose baby died following childbirth say they hope “lessons have been learned” after an inquest returned a verdict of death by ‘Medical Misadventure’.

Baby Darragh McGorry died Tuesday, March 24, 2020, at Cavan General Hospital after being delivered following a type of ‘breech birth’ at his home at Cullies, Shercock, hours earlier.

His bereaved parents, Yvonne and Pauric, told The Anglo-Celt the tragic outcome is something their family “will always live with”.

Land take on horizon as Virginia bypass route confirmed

THE FINAL N3 Virginia Bypass route, which is due for completion in 2031, was officially revealed by Cavan County Council. The route’s finalisation meant the forced land take, dreaded by many, would soon take place with those affected urged to make contact with the project’s liaison officer.

This would be carried out under phase three of the project, the Design and Environmental Evaluation stage.

Tributes paid following Peggy's passing

TRIBUTES have been paid following the passing of much loved former bar lady Peggy Brady from Cavan Town.

Ms Brady (nee Naughton), of St Phelim’s Place, and formerly Curraghboy, Co Roscommon, was hugely popular with all who frequented the Abbey Bar over the decades.

Seemingly defying the passage of time, she continued to work shifts at the Coleman Road public house for 54 years and right into her 90s.

Protest group may front local election candidate

A COMMUNITY group reacting to unconfirmed rumours that the former White Horse Hotel in Cootehill could be used to house asylum seekers or refugees are considering fielding a candidate in the 2024 local elections.

Members of ‘Concerned Citizens of Cootehill’ and its supporters met for the 14th Sunday in a row (May 21) across from the Brady family owned property, stating they’ll continue their public protest until they receive “answers” and assurances.
