The comedian and his partner Laura Nolan scored a respectable 19/30 for their performance of a Viennese Waltz. They appealed to Cavan people and “culchies” everywhere to get behind them.

Rare white-tailed Eagle found dead on Lough Sheelin

A rare white-tailed eagle was found poisoned in Cavan.

Toxicology tests showed the young male bird died after it ingested Carbofuran, an illegal and lethal pest-control poison banned more than a decade ago due of its devastating impact on wildlife.

The white-tailed eagle was brought specially to Ireland from Norway as part of a programme led by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to try to re-establish a species wiped out here nearly a century ago.

Tributes paid to Cllr Seán Smith following his passing

TRIBUTES were paid to sitting Cavan County Councillor Sean Smith from Bawnboy who passed away.

The late Fianna Fáil representative was a brother of Deputy Brendan Smith, TD.

Cllr Smith passed away on Sunday, January 15, after an illness bravely borne. The former Cathaoirleach had served the people of west Cavan on the local authority for more than four decades.

Farewell to much loved reverend

A MIX of emotions swept across Virginia in January as the town bade farewell to their friend and Reverend, the Venerable Canon Craig McCauley.

Rev Craig used his last sermon to say goodbye to the friends he had made during his tenure before taking up a new ministry in Naas, Co Kildare.

“It’s been hard this past week, it’s difficult. Over those years I’ve been part of people’s lives in so many ways and so, in the moving, you’re not just packing up a house.”

THE official opening of an extension to the marina at Ramor Watersports Club saw the local club widely hailed for its role in promoting tourism to the county, as well as inclusivity and accessibility in the sport of sailing.

“You’re doing tremendous work,” praised Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, John Paul Feeley, who went on to say that the work being done by the club creates a “positive impression” for people travelling the N3, especially those for whom the lakeside is their first introduction to the county.

Argos close all stores in Republic

THE union representing staff at Argos insisted they would seek to get them the “best possible deal” after the retail giant announced its shock decision to pull out of the Republic. Argos announced the closure of all of its 34 stores and operations in the Republic by the end of June.

The news impacted almost 600 staff, including those at the Cavan and Monaghan stores, who were informed of the news on January 19.

The branches at Cavan Retail Park and Monaghan Retail Park would close on Saturday, June 24.

• Rachael Burns from Colaiste Dún an Rí scooped two BT Young Scientist prizes.

• Cootehill claimed a Pride of Place Award in the ‘300 and 1000’ population category.

BAD MONTH

• A fire caused serious damage to the kitchen at the Farnham Estate near Cavan Town.

• Ulster Bank closed down its branch in Ballyjamesduff.

• Anger was expressed by councillors at water outages in Mullagh, Virginia, Cross and Maghera - as well as poor pressure in parts of Cavan Town in the run up to Christmas.
