‘Over a dozen sheep’ killed by dogs in Cavan area
Tourists visiting west Cavan during the good spell of weather have caused devastation for some farmers in the area.
Cllr Damien Brady (SF) said that the Glan Gap area to Tullydermot Falls in particular has been highlighted to him, where tourists have let their dogs off the lead resulting in "over a dozen sheep" killed.
"Some people are letting dogs out to roam the fields and bogs," he outlined. "The dogs need to be kept on the lead especially at this time of year during lambing season," he urged.
Some farmers asked the dog owners to keep their pets on a lead, and were told: "There's no sign here that we have to keep the dog on the lead."
"They don't want to stop people coming to these scenic areas," Cllr Brady outlined.
Cllr John Paul Feeley (FF) observed that "some of the dogs are very large".
Director of Services Brendan Jennings said the issue was a matter of "common courtesy, manners and respect" on behalf of the dog owners.
He said "a small group that ruins things for everybody" is a "common theme".
