€130K heritage funding for Cavan
Two projects in Cavan have been awarded €132,084.50 in funding under the 2025 Community Monuments Fund.
The grants, announced last week by Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne, are designed to help owners and custodians of archaeological monuments to safeguard them into the future.
The projects that received the much-needed funding include: Moneygashel, €100,000 and Enagh Windmill & Lime Kiln near Virginia, which was awarded €32,084.50.
Cavan Senator Joe O’Reilly has welcomed these latest developments locally. “I am delighted to see both Moneygashel and Enagh Windmill & Lime Kiln included in the Community Monuments Scheme,” he said.
“Both these projects hold great heritage and importance to the people of Cavan,” added the Fine Gael representative.
Moneygashel Cashel is located close to Blacklion in west Cavan in the heart of the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark where there are remains of three stone Cashels, one of which has been described as ‘the finest of its kind in southern Ulster.’ The Cashel dates from the early Christian period.
The Community Monuments Fund supports a range of initiatives to “conserve, maintain, protect and promote” local monuments and historic sites.
It does so by enabling conservation works and repairs and protecting monuments from the effects of extreme weather and climate change.
The scheme also encourages public access and improvements to the presentation of local monuments.
