Funds for community groups in Bailieborough-Cootehill

Roof repairs in Kingscourt and an outdoor notice board in Lavey are among the projects set to receive thousands of euros in discretionary funds divvied out by local councillors in the Bailieborough-Cootehill Municipal District area.

The funding was approved when local elected members met at the former Station Master’s House in Kingscourt last month.

The highest amount (€17,800) was allocated to Kingscourt Community Centre to help pay for the replacement of a large part of the main roof to avoid any further damage to be caused to the main floor.

The next biggest grant (€12,800) was awarded to Ballyhaise Development Association to purchase a new generator that can be installed in an enclosed casing outside the local community hall, as well as to provide for electronic blackout blinds on the windows. A sum of €7,000 will be given to Lavey GAA Club Community towards the installation of a new outdoor notice board, which will be used to promote community activities; with €6,000 for Cootehill Town Team to assist their endeavours in celebrating the Tercentenary of Cootehill in 2025.

Lavey Strand Development intend to use the €5,800 they’ve got to install new seating at the lake for visitors; while Shercock Tidy Towns will spend their allocation of €5,500 on new stone flower beds at welcome signs on the Canningstown, Carrickmacross and Kingscourt roads into the village.

Elsewhere, Tunnyduff Hall Committee has received €5,000 for the purchase of stacking chairs that will allow for a wider range of activities to take place in the hall and provide a more inviting space for users.

A sum of €4,500 will each be given to Bailieborough Community Association for improvement works and planting in community spaces and to Laragh Sports Partnership for a concrete plinth on which they intend to install three outdoor exercise machines at Laragh Community Park close to the recently completed children’s playground.

Several local groups received sums of €4,000 each. They include Drumgoon Community Centre Co-operative Society to create a corridor from reception through a room for access to the stage and green room; Drumnaveil Resident’s Association to develop a patch of waste ground into a picnic area; Kill Community Development towards capital works at the community centre; and Kill Shamrocks GAA to provide fencing at the community walking track.

The remaining groups to receive allocations were Bailieborough Shamrocks GAA (€3,300) to purchase additional bays for their stage in the community space at their clubrooms; Redhills GAC (€3,300) match funding towards the development of a 750-metre community nature walking trail; and €3,000 to Kingscourt Harps AFC to install a concrete base to enable people with disabilities or visually impaired access to the clubrooms.
