Nearly €200K in funding allocated for Cavan Monaghan heritage projects
The announcement was made by Minister of State for Heritage, Christopher O’Sullivan this morning.
Close to €180,000 in funding has been allocated to heritage projects in Cavan and Monaghhan.
The allocation includes Moneygashel, Blacklion: €100,000; and Enagh Windmill & Lime Kiln €32,084.5 in Co Cavan and St Patrick’s Well, Clonfad: €30,000; and Killevan Abbey: €15,239.70 in Co Monaghan.
The funding, which was announced by the Minister of State for Heritage, Christopher O’Sullivan is being allocated under the Community Monuments Fund and is being “welcomed” by local Fianna Fáil TD, Brendan Smith.
“The Community Monuments Fund provides funding to support the conservation, maintenance, protection and promotion of local monuments and historic sites,” he added. "Such monuments are of interest to local communities and visitors.
"I compliment the heritage officers in both Cavan and Monaghan on their work in obtaining funding through national schemes. It helps to preserve our local heritage through investment in our built heritage and in archaeological monuments.
"Local community groups also play a pivotal role in safeguarding and promoting heritage in every parish throughout Cavan and Monaghan.”
Meanwhile, the Minister added: “As we approach World Heritage Day, the international Day for monuments and sites, on Friday 18 April, I am thrilled to announce 122 awards worth €7.5M under the 2025 Community Monuments Fund.
"This vital initiative not only preserves our rich heritage but also strengthens the connection between our communities and their history creating opportunities for education and tourism.
Since this fund was first introduced in 2020, it has invested €25.5M in communities nationwide. It is now a bedrock of our support for archaeological heritage across the country helping conserve buildings as varied as churches, roundtowers, castles, forts, barracks and, abbeys.
“This scheme helps to build robustness in our heritage against the extremes of weather, addressing key actions in our Climate Adaptation Plan as well as under Heritage Ireland 2030.
"These awards also deliver jobs for the heritage sector and traditional skills craftspeople, providing thousands of hours of employment every year.”
