Garda avoids injury during incident at checkpoint
Man before the courts charged with motoring offences
A man is set to appear before the courts following an incident at a checkpoint in Cavan over the weekend.
On Saturday night two Garda members were conducting a checkpoint at Crosskeys, Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan.
Cavan Monaghan Gardaí reported on its social media channels yesterday that, when a vehicle approached the checkpoint at speed, it then crossed over onto the wrong side of the road "to try and run down a Garda Member".
They say, luckily, the Garda was able to get out of the way in time.
Gardaí further reported that the vehicle drove in the direction of Cavan Town and failed to stop for gardaí.
The vehicle was subsequently intercepted on the Ballinagh Road, Cavan Town.
Gardaí say the driver of the vehicle "resisted arrest and assaulted two Garda members" before he could be detained.
One Garda was brought to Cavan General Hospital by ambulance and was released Sunday morning with non serious injuries.
It transpired that the driver of the vehicle had no insurance, tax or NCT. They also failed to provide a road side breath test.
The vehicle was seized and the driver is now before the Courts charged with the alleged offences.
