Cavan incident captured in recent garda figures

Number of residential burglaries dropped by 75% nationally

Four teens arrested by armed gardai after being caught in a stolen vehicle last month is among the incidents captured and considered as a success by gardaí who published figures regarding Winter Phase operations 2024/25.

The arrests, at a premises outside Cavan Town, followed a series of raids from businesses located in counties Cavan and Monaghan, which resulted in the alleged theft of several thousand euros worth of goods.

The vehicle had been the subject of an unauthorised taking earlier that week in Dublin 22, and one of the teenagers arrested was remanded in detention following an appearance at a special sitting of Cavan District Court.

Across the board gardaí say the number of residential burglaries dropped by 75% nationally, compared to the same period 10 years ago, with an average of approximately 17 burglaries per day across the 26 counties, or less than one per day per county.

In the 10 years of Operation Thor, the number of recorded residential burglaries during the winter phase (October – March) has also dropped by three quarters.

During the 24/25 winter phase under Operation Thor there were 900 arrests for incidents linked to Operation Thor including Burglary, Aggravated Burglary, or Possession of an Article; and more than 2,000 charges including Burglary, Aggravated Burglary, or Possession of an Article.

“An Garda Síochána takes a whole of organisation approach to tackling rural residential burglaries being carried out by organised crime groups,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Boland of the GNDOCB. “Significant detections carried out by Divisional Serious Crime units supported by National units clearly demonstrate An Garda Síochána’s determination to continue to detect and prevent these pernicious crimes.”

He added that gardaí recognise the “long lasting impact any burglary has not just on the victim but on communities, both rural and urban. An Garda Síochána’s message is that we are here to help, we are here to protect and we continue to arrest and charge those involved in these insidious crime.”
