Carolan and Morris selected on Sigerson Cup Team of the Year

Cuchulainns defender Niall Carolan and Kingscourt Stars forward Jordan Morris have been recognised for their outstanding performances for Technological University Dublin (TUD) in the Sigerson Cup with their selection on the 2025 Electric Ireland GAA Higher Education Championship Football Team of the Year.

Cavan senior corner-back Carolan has been in fine form of late for the county senior team, having captained the U20 side to the Ulster final three years ago, and was highly impressive as an attacking corner-back for TUD throughout a fiercely-contested Sigerson campaign.

Also selected on the team at corner-forward was Meath senior star and Kingscourt Stars clubman Jordan Morris.

Morris's brilliant performances for TUD almost catapulted them into the final of the competition. Unfortunately, Jordan picked up a nasty-looking injury when lining out for Meath in their draw with Westmeath last Sunday in round seven of the National League and it is hoped the outstanding attacker will not be sidelined for long.

During this year’s Championship, Dublin City University (DCU Dóchas Éireann) took home their sixth Sigerson Cup title, winning for the first time since 2020; their vice-captain was Cavan and Gowna’s Ryan Donohoe. This win came after defeating Dublin rivals University College Dublin (UCD) in the final at the University of Galway Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence, Bekan, Co. Mayo.

UCD reached the final after a penalty shoot-out win against a strong TU Dublin side which also included the likes of Cavan panellists Cian Reilly, Cormac McKeogh and Darragh Lovett, hoping to claim their first title since 2018.

However, DCU DÉ's dominant defence stifled the UCD attack in the final. DCU DÉ, who overcame defending champions Ulster University (UU) in extra time of the semi-final, secured a 4-point victory after a cohesive, energetic and slick performance in the all-Dublin derby final.

After another thrilling season, champions DCU DÉ dominate the 2025 Team of the Year with seven players earning a spot. Runners-up UCD earned four places, with semi-finalists TU Dublin and UU filling two each on the star-studded squad, meaning Carolan and Morris are two of only four players to make the 15 whose team did not qualify for the Sigerson Cup final.

Niall is the fourth generation of the Carolan family to represent Cavan at senior level. His uncle Ronan is one of the county’s all-time leading scorers and his grandfather Paddy, who recently turned 96, was an All-Ireland SFC medallist in 1952.

Morris was in fine form all year as he scored 2-34 (0-14 from frees) in an excellent individual National League campaign.
