Three Cavan schools enroute to national enterprise finals

Local Enterprise Office (LEO) Cavan has confirmed this week that teenage entrepreneurs from Royal School, Cavan; St Clare's College, Ballyjamesduff; and Bailieborough Community School will represent County Cavan at this year’s Student Enterprise Programme national finals next month, on Thursday, May 8 in Mullingar.

The students emerged victorious after taking part in the County Final on Tuesday, March 11, at the Slieve Russell Hotel, Ballyconnell, where over 160 students from 10 schools participated in the local annual programme.

Special guests on the day included Cathaoirleach, Cllr T.P. O’Reilly (FG), Senator Pauline Tully (SF), Cllr Aine Smith (FF), Cllr Carmel Brady (FG), Cllr Clifford Kelly (FF), Cllr Damien Brady (SF), Cllr Niall Smith (FF), Cllr Niamh Brady (FG), Cllr Winston Bennett (FG) and Eoin Doyle, Chief Executive, Cavan County Council.

The students enjoyed a thought-provoking and inspirational talk from County Cavan businessman Kieran Callaghan, founder and owner of Callaghan Electrical, Stradone. Kieran shared some of the personal and business challenges that he has faced along his entrepreneurial journey and how all of that has helped shape his successful business in which over 81 people are employed.

“We have a very successful student enterprise programme here in County Cavan, with over 150 students from 10 local schools taking part this year,” Conor Craven, Head of Enterprise, LEO Cavan, told those gathered.

“Our national finalists are excellent ambassadors for the programme and we wish them the very best of luck on Thursday, May 8.

“What our students are learning from the programme is that, with the right supports and encouragement, they can take an idea from the classroom and develop it into a real-life business. The skills they learn along the way, such as business planning, market research, selling and team-work, will help them become more entrepreneurial throughout their future careers”.

The initiative is funded by the Government through Enterprise Ireland and delivered by the 31 Local Enterprise Offices in local authorities throughout the country. The programme supports students to create, design and market their own business, all with the hope of reaching the national finals.
