Over €9.4m roads funding boost for Cavan

Cavan has received over €9.4million for National Roads funding with the long mooted Virginia Bypass project the biggest winner in the county.

The funding was announced today as part of a total of over €633m allocated to National Roads nationwide.

An allocation of €9,409,633 has been approved for Cavan while a further €9,257,829 has been allocated for Monaghan, bringing the total for the constituency to €18,667,462.

In County Cavan the stand out projects to benefit are the completion of the N55 from Corduff to South of Killydoon €2,900,000; Virginia Bypass has received €1.2m; the Belturbet bypass has been allocated €325,000; while there is also €300,000 for the N3 Virginia-Maghera safety scheme.

There was almost half a million in funding to cover items such as winter maintenance and route lighting.

The allocations will be made to local authorities across the country through Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

“The funding allocated is hugely important for National Roads in Cavan and Monaghan," said Deputy Brendan Smith. "It is part of the government’s investment in improving our national roads infrastructure. It will help ensure that our roads are safe, reliable and accessible for everyone who uses them."

His Fianna Fáil colleague Minister for State at the Department of Enterprise, Niamh Smyth also welcomed the news.

“I want to really thank my colleague Minister Darragh O’Brien for working with me on the delivery of this funding to Cavan and Monaghan, which at over €18m is a significant investment,” remarked Minister Smyth.

“The local authorities in both Cavan and Monaghan have done huge work on preparing schemes for Transport Infrastructure Ireland and I am proud to see our exceptional staff in both councils receive the funding they need to do their job.”

Meanwhile Senator Joe O’Reilly of Fine Gael said: “I am delighted to see that funding has been allocated to Cavan County Council for essential national road repair works across Cavan. The continued safety for all road users is a key priority for Fine Gael in government and key to that is the protection and regeneration of our existing national road network.”
