Apprenticeships 'crucial' to economic growth

A discussion around college placements for apprentices was initiated during a recently held meeting of Cavan County Council members by Cllr Aine Smith (FF) who pointed to how “crucial” they were to Ireland’s economic growth and social development.

“In a rapidly evolving job market, the need for skilled workers has never been more pressing,” said Cllr Smith.

“Apprenticeships provide a unique and effective pathway for individuals to gain practical experience and develop essential skills, thereby contributing to the nation’s economic and social prosperity.

“Numerous industries in Ireland including construction, engineering, and healthcare face significant skills’ shortages.

Apprenticeships offer a direct solution by training individuals in the specific skills required by these sectors, ensuring a steady supply of qualified professionals.

“A highly skilled workforce enhances Ireland’s competitiveness on the global stage. Companies with access to skilled apprentices are better positioned to innovate, grow, and compete in international markets.”

Cllr Smith also pointed to how accessible apprenticeships are to individuals from diverse backgrounds, providing an alternative to traditional academic routes. “They allow those who may not excel in a classroom setting to thrive in a hands-on learning environment,” she added.

Meanwhile, Cllr Shane P O’Reilly lent his support to the motion. He added: “Apprenticeships have always been seen as the poor relation when it comes to education and they are far from it. Solas has worked quite well with those involved in the electrical trades and there is a centre in Cavan for this. But, unfortunately, the same can’t be said for mechanics or carpentry.”

Cllr O’Reilly went on to say that a situation has developed in Cavan where apprentices are being sent to Cork and Shannon “which,” he continued”is a considerable distance from Cavan”.

“There are also qualifications that are not recognised by Safe Electric and that needs to be addressed as well.”

There was unanimous support for the motion.
