Protest planned in light of latest attacks in Gaza
A pro-Palestine group will voice their solidarity with the people of Gaza after the latest attacks through a vigil in Cavan this week.
Cavan branch of Irish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) are calling on the public to join them in their protest tomorrow (Friday) outside the council buildings at Cavan District Court.
This comes as a fresh wave bombardments target Gaza, undermining the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas earlier this year.
“Within the last 48 hours, Israel has unfortunately violated the ceasefire entirely and has started bombing with complete impunity,” said Megan de Siún from the Cavan branch of IPSC.
This phase of the conflict has claimed the lives of over 48,000 Palestinians, while Israel suffered the loss of approximately 1,200 people.
While the official death toll from the Gaza Health Ministry is around 600 people, Megan suspects it is much larger, citing figures from the Palestinian Authority and eye witness accounts.
“In the last 48 hours, the death toll has indicated that there is about a thousand people massacred so far, which is a massive escalation to what the violence has been, even before the ceasefire.
"Within the first 16 months or so of this campaign of violence, there were about 48,000 people accounted for that have been murdered. So we’re talking about 1/48th of the entire death toll since this has begun,” continued Megan.
Megan expresses dismay over the spiralling death toll in the Gaza Strip.
“It’s an incredibly emotional thing to wake up to - 400 people having been killed in the night. When it is that, so violently and viciously, it really does affect you personally on an emotional level.”
Tomorrow's vigil runs from 12-1pm at the council buildings on Farnham Road, and is intended to display solidarity with the Palestinian people. Everyone is welcome to attend.
