Derek remembered in garden

An exquisite piece of birch wood has been crafted into a lovely plaque in memory of the late Derek Jermyn, whose woodwork skills and general craftsmanship can been seen all around the garden site. He enjoyed using his creativity and skills for the betterment of the facilities in this tranquil space.

Ciaran Gray, ETB tutor explained that Derek was an active member of the Fairgreen Community Garden for many years and was instrumental in building the cabin, now utilised as a classroom facility.

“He was also instrumental in putting many other facilities in place on the site and he was a very affable and skilled tradesman. He had a huge input into the development of this community garden and he will never be forgotten,” said Ciaran Gray.

The birch plaque was created by Ciaran Gray and his family and is a nice final touch to the log cabin.

The cabin's roof has solar panels, and its drains are connected to water buttes .

“With the use of the solar panels, we now give more electricity back to the grid than we actually use here in the garden. We are harvesting the water off all our roofs and this water is then used to water our polytunnels.

The water can also be used to water flowers around the town”, said Paul Lynch Vice Chairman of the Community Garden Community and the Cavan Tidy Towns Committee.
