Local credit union leaders elected to ILCU board
Two new board members with strong ties to the Cavan, Monaghan, and Meath area were appointed to the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU) last weekend.
David Donagh of Link Credit Union was elected for a two-year term, while Brendan Jenkins of Clones Credit Union was successfully elected for a three-year term. These elections ensure strong local representation at the highest level of the Irish Credit Union movement.
Existing ILCU board member Helene McManus was successfully re-elected for a three-year term. Helene has strong Cavan connections as she is originally from Ballyconnell.
David Donagh, who follows in the footsteps of his grandfather (a founding member of Kingscourt Credit Union) and his father a board member, is currently a third-generation credit union director on the board of Link Credit Union, which covers the Kingscourt, Bailieborough, Moynalty and Cootehill areas.
A primary school teacher, seconded to the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO), David has been deeply involved in many community initiatives, including Cavan Monaghan Youthreach, Tanagh Outdoor Education Centre, and Kingscourt St Vincent de Paul.
As one of the youngest directors ever elected to the ILCU board, David is committed to ensuring the voice of younger members is represented, while championing digital transformation, and balancing tradition with innovation to help Credit Unions remain relevant for future generations.
Brendan Jenkins, former CEO of Clones Credit Union, brings nearly three decades of leadership experience, having served as CEO for 28 years before retiring in June 2024 and prior to that serving as a director for 11 years. His extensive knowledge of the Credit Union sector, combined with his involvement in both the ILCU International Development Foundation and ECCU user group, will be invaluable in shaping policies that support Credit Unions across Ireland.
Having local representatives on the ILCU board is a major advantage for credit unions in the Cavan, Monaghan, and Meath areas. David and Brendan will ensure that the challenges faced by credit unions, as well as opportunities for growth and development, are strongly represented at a national level. Their expertise and dedication will help influence key decisions that impact Credit Unions and their members across the country.
Her election marks an exciting chapter for local credit unions, further strengthening their voice in national discussions and helping to shape the future of the credit union movement in Ireland.
