St Mogue’s came up short in the Ward Cup final yesterday against Coláiste Ailigh from Donegal.
Despite playing with the wind in the first half, the Bawnboy school went in at half-time trailing by three points, 2-2 to 0-5.
A flurry of early scores in the second half saw the Donegal side open a seven-point lead and although St Mogue’s cut the gap, with Seamus O’Reilly prominent and Dylan Edwards bagging a brilliant individual goal, the Cavan boys couldn’t overhaul the eventual winners.
Two excellent points from play from Edwards and a left-footed O’Reilly effort made it 0-3 to 0-1 after 18 minutes but two breakaway goals (one a penalty) for Coláiste Ailigh saw them move five clear.
Mark Fahy and Luke McCaffrey both registered to leave three in it at half-time.
St Mogue’s struggled to retain possession against the wind, with O’Reilly (two) and McCaffrey on the mark.
But Coláiste Ailigh made the wind count and ran out narrow but deserving winners.
