Nuremore Hotel sold with major refurb planned

The Nuremore Hotel & Country Club in Carrickmacross has been sold to a consortium of investors understood to be led by the well-known family of hoteliers, the McGettigans.

Agent CBRE confirmed the sale of the landmark 70-bedroom Monaghan property on behalf of Declan De Lacy, Liquidator of Nubility Capital Ltd, last week.

The hotel, which ceased trading in 2023, was being offered for sale with a guide price of around €6M, less than the €8M believed to have been paid for it in 2020 when past owners Julie Gilhooly and her family sold it to Chinese investor Kai Dai and his Kylin Prime Group as a going concern.

In late 2022, Nuremore staff staged a work stoppage over unpaid wages and then, in January 2023, the hotel closed “for refurbishment” but never reopened.

The High Court subsequently made orders to wind up Nuremore Hotel Management Ltd after a judge accepted the company was insolvent and unable to pay its debt to Revenue.

By early 2024, CBRE revealed it had received indicative offers in the region of €7M, with two interested parties keen to revive hotel and golf business to its former glory.

However, Mr de Lacy decided to put it on the open market.

The hotel and 18-hole championship standard golf resort, which sits on 160 acres of lush parkland, also includes a standalone club house, restaurant, bar and leisure centre as well as a large function and a custom-built conference centre. It also has two outdoor tennis courts and these facilities will all now fall under the multi million-euro refurbishment plan.

It has been reported that the McGettigans, who already own hotels located in Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Limerick, Sligo, Wicklow and Glasgow, and their fellow investors will create more than 100 new jobs in the area once the Nuremore reopens.

“When the opportunity to acquire Nuremore arose, we immediately recognised its potential - not just as a business investment but as a key asset for the local community,” said a spokesperson for the investor group.

“Our goal is to breathe new life into the hotel and golf club, enhancing both the environmental and economic landscape of the area.”

They added that the investors are “committed” to a comprehensive refurbishment of the property, “working in close collaboration with the local council, national organisations, and key stakeholders to maximise the site’s potential.”

Outlined too is the tie-in with the existing McGettigan hospitality group.

“We are excited to introduce new food and beverage options, including a McGettigan’s Pub, while also reinvigorating the golf course, meeting facilities, and leisure centre.”
