Co Cavan Golf Club – a charming setting for that special occasion

News

Co Cavan Golf Club, one of the oldest golf clubs in the country, has major fundraising and development plans and is hopeful of a “community response”, according to club captain Tom Sullivan.

The clubhouse has recently been refurbished and is now offering an additional venue in the county for that special corporate or social event. Founded in 1846, it is the oldest sporting club in the county and is also the only member owned 18-hole golf course in Co. Cavan.

Like all clubs, voluntary effort and fundraising are essential for the future development of the club and the members have put a lot of effort into ensuring that the club and course will provide an enjoyable and memorable experience for visitors.

It is an ideal location for corporate events, whether to entertain customers or staff. The course and clubhouse can be booked for exclusive use, offering full bar and dining room services, a boardroom and golf. There is car parking for 120 cars and, most importantly, the club offers that feeling of space with no outside distractions. Easily accessed, the club is located just 3kms west of Cavan Town on the Killeshandra Road.

The clubhouse, dating back to the 19th century and home to Percy French’s first wife Ethel Armitage-Moore, is full of charm and ideally suited for anniversaries, birthday parties, special occasions, christenings, funeral lunches and weddings for up to 80 guests.

Part of the new plans is a 50-50 draw, the first of which was won by Harry McIntyre last week, who claimed the prize of €1,060.

“I have to give credit to Brendan Crowe and the fundraising team, Brendan is the vice-captain and it was really his idea. We turned over €2,000 in the first week and had our first winner,” Tom explained.

Guaranteed €1,000 prize

There is a guaranteed minimum prize of a €1,000 every week.

“The club has identified a number of trends and areas in which they can grow.

“Approximately 480 members across a range of membership categories are currently playing golf. However, our full membership category is in decline.

“If you take Longford as an example, there is one golf course in the county whereas in Cavan, we have Virginia, Crover, ourselves, Farnham Estate and then Belturbet, the Slieve Russell and Blacklion and then Clones is very nearby as well so that’s a lot of courses in a relatively small demographic area.

“So with an ageing profile, revenue streams diminish so it’s important from our own perspective that we grow this, particularly the under 35’s and those maybe who are coming to the end of their football-playing career, for example, and are looking for another sporting outlet. We have a specific sub-committee looking at membership, pricing structures and so on.

“A lot of work is going on to encourage juveniles to take up golf,” he said.

"This includes group and individual coaching from our club pro Pete Duignan and a juvenille committee chaired by James McDermott. Regular competitions will be arranged during the school holiday periods."

The weekly draw is part of an overall plan to increase revenue streams in order to develop facilities and grow membership.

“Club lottos are the lifeblood of GAA clubs and the same applies for golf clubs,” he said.

The club is also working hard to attract more individual and society green fees, with special deals on offer.

“There is a small number of volunteers who do a huge amount of work. The shop will be open on a full-time basis as well so this is another positive for the years ahead.

“It is our intention to continue to develop our fine club and to grow the sport for all ages in the years ahead,” concluded Captain Tom.
