Uisce Éireann fixing mains until mid May

Additional ageing water mains to be replaced

Works to replacing 1.5 kilometres of old water mains in Cavan Town to reduce bursts affecting homes and businesses will run from the beginning of next week until mid-May, Uisce Éireann has confirmed.

The extended period of road closure, which is set to be applied for in the coming days, comes after additional ageing water mains which need to be replaced have been identified.

Uisce Éireann crews will arrive along Railway Road next week and begin work on removing the ageing pipes and lay new ones.

The section of works will run along the R212 College Street and the R198 Railway Road, with an order to close the R212-3 Farnham Place from the end of Wolfe Tone Street (L-2539-0) and Bridge Street (L-2532-0) to the Railway Road Roundabout (R198-0) each night, Monday to Thursday, initially from 7pm to 7am, February 17 to March 7.

Traffic lights will be in place on the R198 Railway Road from the Farnham Street roundabout to the junction at Cavan General Hospital.

However, the contractor Farrans, who previously replaced almost 200 metres of old water mains on Bridge Street and Wolfe Tone Street back in 2022, are set to seek for that to be extended now until May 16.

The works between March and May 16 will also be done at night, with one lane closed and and stop-go system in place.

The latest works are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.

Uisce Éireann’s Programme Manager Patricia Lowry is looking forward to delivering the project for customers in Cavan, and assured locals that emergency and local traffic will be facilitated at all times.

“This work will bring a range of benefits for our customers in the area including reliability of supply and improved water quality. It will also help us achieve our 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%. The National Leakage Reduction team has made great strides since 2018 when the leakage rate stood at 46%.”

Areas of work will be limited to short sections and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned interruptions, and Ms Lowry said: “We understand that this type of work is inconvenient, and our crews are making every effort to minimise disruption to the local community. These works are vital to ensure Cavan’s security of supply now and into the future, with the long-term benefits far outweighing any short-term inconvenience. We thank the community for their patience and cooperation as these essential works progress”.
