Why Having Great Skincare Even Matters
You Look Great, You Feel Great
This concept is pretty easy to understand – you look great – you feel great. Take a person like Alicia Keys, for example, a person who has been championing wearing zero makeup! She can get away with that because her skin is gorgeous! If you have great skin, you can just wake up in the morning, put on little to no makeup, and feel great when you walk out of the house!
Makeup Will Sit Just Right
Say you have a fabulous range of makeup and you want to play with it – if you have dry, bumpy skin, that makeup just won't sit right. People seem to think makeup is the magic eraser – but that cannot be further from the truth! Makeup only enhances your features and it needs a smooth, clean canvas, that is your face, to do its best work. So good skincare is just as important as good-looking makeup!
You Make One Heck Of An Impression
First impressions are a thing; if you’re at a job interview, first date, or meeting new people, your skin is the first thing someone notices. When you have healthy skin, it will change the impression someone has of you. It speaks volumes! Your skin says “self-care alert. This girl seriously knows how to take care of herself.” People are constantly judging us by the way we look and healthy skin is your power position.
A Simple Yet Effective Skincare Routine
Morning
1. Cleanser: Start with a gentle cleanser to wash off all the sweat and oil. Opt for something moisturizing to get the day rolling.
2. Toner: Swipe on some toner to help with the pH balance of your skin. (This will also help the rest of your subsequent products seep into your skin more easily.)
3. Moisturizer: Consider your moisturizer a sip of water for your skin. Make sure to apply a hydrating formula that works for your skin type.
4. Sunscreen: Never forget your SPF; it’s your daily armor against harmful UV rays!
Evening
1. Cleanser: Double cleanse if you put on make-up. An oil-based cleanser, followed by a water base, is a game-changer.
2. Toner: Re-apply your toner to reset and calm your skin after a long day out.
3. Treatment: This is where you can get really targeted. Implement additional products to solve your specific skin concerns (aka serums that are filled with antibodies).
4. Moisturizer: Apply a richer moisturizer before sleep, to let your skin fester in it and to soak all the nourishing benefits.
A Not So Simple And Super Effective Skincare Routine
Ready for the next level? More steps mean even more glow!
Morning
1. Cleanser: You want to make sure your skin is extra clean, so you want to make sure you go for the 1-2 punch with your cleanser, aka the double cleanse! For those early hours, we recommend a non-foaming one that won’t make your skin feel dry – but that will depend on your skin. Pro Tip: Go for one with some antioxidants like Vitamin C!
2. Exfoliating Toner: Use an exfoliating toner once or twice a week with AHA or BHA to help your skin smooth and brighten by turning over dead skin cells.
3. Essence: Something that is packed with ingredients to hydrate and plump your pores will be your best friend in this step. It will also assist all your other products to absorb better.
4. Serum: Something that is more specific to your skincare needs, like a Hyaluronic Acid serum for hydration or a Vitamin C for dullness.
5. Moisturizer: A gel or cream formulation that hydrates without clogging pores.
6. Sunscreen: Always finish with a broad-spectrum SPF, even on cloudy days!
Evening
1. Cleanser: Your first cleanse with your oil base, followed by your second cleanse with foam or milk. Finish this step with a rewash with your cloth.
2. Exfoliating Toner: Follow up with an exfoliating toner to keep your pores clear.
3. Treatment: Any products you may have to treat, so any prescribed retinoid or acne treatment from your dermatologist.
4. Eye Cream: Don’t forget. That. Eye. Cream. Your eye skin is super delicate!
5. Moisturizer: Something a little heavier and creamier that you can slather on to work wonders while you sleep.
6. Facial Oil: For an additional boost, seal everything in with a nourishing facial oil.
What To Know Before Buying Skin Care and Creating A Routine
Your Skin Type
Identifying your skin type is absolutely critical — is it oily, dry, a combination, or sensitive? A simple way to determine is to check what your face feels like post wash up — sticky indicates oily skin, tight means it’s dry and if it feels just about alright, you’re probably in the normal category!
Do You Have Any Skin Issues?
If you are facing issues such as acne, eczema, hives or anything else that your skin does not take well to, then you should ideally be looking at products that are specifically designed to help with your issues.
Maybe Go Over To A Dermatologist
If nothing seems to be working out well and you’re unable to find products that suit your skin type and issues, then perhaps schedule a consultation with a dermatologist to find what may work for you.
Do You Want To Combine Your At-Home Skin Care Plan With More Aggressive Procedures?
Would you consider a product that may need professional treatment (like Botox or peels)? This is important in determining what products you ought to be using.
Your Budget!
Here is some great news – effective skincare doesn’t necessarily mean spending all you have on it. And here is the good news: there is effective skincare at different price points for just about every budget!
Race
Different strokes for different folks. Your race plays a part in the skincare use! Darker skin tones are more prone to hyperpigmentation, and lighter skin tones age spots and freckles! So– choosing the right skincare is absolutely imperative!
Be Willing To Experiment
You may have to play around with skincare for a little while before you figure out what works for your flavor of skin!
Check Out The Beauty Communities on Social Media
