A focus on recovery at Bailieborough Leisure Centre

Bailieborough Leisure Centre has launched a new Revitalise Recovery Unit to help users excel their performance this year.

Boasting a hot tub, ice bath, loungers with compression boots and an infrared sauna, the facility is ideal for gym goers after pushing themselves to the limits in the gym, for those involved in any kind of sport and for people who simply want to relax.

Bailieborough Leisure Centre Manager Linda Ledwith is delighted to have the facility on site.

“Across the board, it's suited to everybody,” she said.

The unit is ideal for those looking for “relaxation and recovery” especially after training when it will “reduce the build up of lactic acid”.

“It's aimed for recovery from hard training session and that sort of thing, to promote and aid the muscles,” she explained.

Overall, the sports facility is home to a fully equipped gym, swimming pool, jacuzzi and fitness studio, and has seen a busy January.

“We can definitely notice the increase in the gym and then in the swimming pool,” said Ms Ledwith.

“Our adult lessons are pretty busy again, the aqua aerobics, everybody is into their health and fitness now coming into January.”

Routine

In terms of maintaining a fitness routine, the manager, who is a regular gym user herself, has the following advice.

“Start slow and steady would be the main thing rather than going into training straight away.

“A good balanced diet on top of that actually helps rather than going on to any of these fad and quick diets.”

She recommended that three days per week is “more than enough” for people to train.

“If you could set out just the three days as opposed to having to go the seven days or having it in their head that they have to train every day.

“You have to obviously allow for recovery and you don't want to get bored of the training then which happens to a lot of people.

“I'd be a huge advocate myself for the gym and I believe in a good balanced diet, not to cut out a huge amount of things unless obviously recommended by your doctor or your GP.”

For sustainability, she advised “everything in moderation”.

“It's the only thing that lasts with people,” she added.

For those thinking of signing up to the gym or calling into Bailieborough Leisure Centre, there is always somebody on hand to provide advice.

“We have fitness instructors here, there's usually one on per shift,” she said, outlining that the facility offers assessments and a gym programme for those who wish to avail of them.

“We sit them down, have a little chat with them and ask what their goals are and we'll design a programme then to suit what they want.”

“It could be for a medical background that they are training or it could be for the fact that they just want to lose weight or tone up so we'll do a programme designed for them,” she concluded.
