Frustration at delay of signage

Frustration over the delay of roadside signage boiled over at the Bailieborough-Cootehill Municipal District meeting.

With orders put in well in advance of the Christmas period, Fianna Fáil’s Clifford Kelly was told he’d have to wait a little longer before the Moynalty sign on the Kells Road out of Kingscourt is finally replaced.

He said it was knocked down some time back, that two holding posts had been installed since, but no further progress.

“It’ll be up in the next two weeks,” Cllr Kelly was informed by Senior Area Engineer for the district, Clinton Mulligan. “It will be fitted once we take delivery.”

When Cllr Kelly continued to castigate over the apparent delay, even suggesting that there might be reason to look for such work to be done elsewhere in future, the response was simply: “If we don’t have the sign, we can’t install it.”

Some understanding was sought from Cllr Kelly, who was reminded that the Christmas holiday period also may have affected the order status.

The need for a new sign at Canningstown was raised by Aontú’s Sarah O’Reilly who was informed that an order had been made.

Fianna Fáil’s Niall Smith meanwhile asked the executive and council crews to be more aware of areas where signs had been turned away from facing oncoming traffic.

Mr Mulligan said that local authority crews were out daily and deal with such occurrences “as they see it”.
