Golden opportunity to see Golden Eye

Birdwatch Ireland outing this Saturday morning

This Saturday presents a possible chance to see a beautiful but sadly endangered duck in Cavan.

The Goldeneye will be amongst the list of water birds the Cavan branch of BirdWatch Ireland hop to see when they visit Lough Inchin, near Butlserbridge.

Tom Broe, chairperson of the local branch, says this Saturday is "an excellent opportunity" to enjoy "really good views of waterbirds".

"It's a long and narrow lake so in theory the birds are never too far away," Tom explains. "Of particular note is a species of duck called the goldeneye."

The Goldeneye is a winter visitor, which typically arrives on our shores between November and April, and come from populations breeding in Finland, Russia, Norway or Sweden. The medium sized duck with a yellow coloured eye, which gives it its name, is sadly on the red conservation list.

The outing to see ducks, swans and other waterbirds on Lough Inchin will last about two hours.

Meet this Saturday, February 1 at 10am at the carpark in front of Derryheen Church of Ireland (eircode H12FK25). This is about 15-20 minutes from Cavan Town.

"If you haven't been birdwatching before, you are very welcome to join us and see for yourself. we can share binoculars with those who don't have any. Please wear warm clothes," said Tom.
