ESB Networks calls for increased awareness on public safety following Storm Éowyn

Warning about 'hidden risks' from live wires and generator use

ESB Networks is reinforcing its vital warning around public safety as crews enter five of the restoration of supply following Storm Éowyn, which caused unprecedented damage to electricity infrastructure nationwide.

A public safety message has been issued by the service provider.

"We wish to strongly reiterate our safety request to the general public to focus people's attention on electrical safety while outdoors. We still have many faults on the electricity network and have been made aware of several instances of potentially very dangerous incidents where members of the public have unknowingly approached fallen electricity infrastructure, particularly in the worst impacted areas of the country."

It continues: "Following a significant weather event like Storm Éowyn, fallen debris can prevent people from seeing hidden risks such as wires entangled into trees and branches."

It urges: "If you come across fallen wires or damaged electricity network, never, ever touch or approach these as they are LIVE and extremely dangerous. Please report any damage to electricity infrastructure by calling 1800 372 999."

ESB Networks says it has also been made aware of "dangerous instances" as a result of the increase in use of generators. It has released a safety video for more information.
