Swanlinbar Health Centre to be extended

A recently appointed GP in west Cavan has been given the go ahead by local planners for the change in use of a domestic garage to new consultation rooms as part of his plans to expand services at the existing Swanlinbar Health Centre.

Dr Cristian Cimpoeru secured planning permission from the local authority last week. Approved works also include the construction of a fully serviced, single-storey extension to the front of the property at Creamery Road, together with connections to the existing public sewer, parking and all other associated site works.

He will furthermore be allowed to retain alterations to existing elevations and all associated works to the existing dwelling house, and partial works and all associated alterations carried out to the existing garage, including foundations to front and internal timber studwork and finishes.

Only last year did Dr Cristian Cimpoeru sign contracts to become the new permanent GP in Swanlinbar, drawing a line under what had become an uncertain situation after the HSE, claiming difficulties with recruitment, proposed a pilot scheme run from Ballyconnell.

However, locals successfully protested the move and backed the retention of Dr Cimpoeru, who had been providing services in Swanlinbar on a locum basis since the retirement of Dr Jacqueline Ellis-Deering and her husband Kevin in October 2020.

Speaking to the Celt at the time, Romanian national Dr Cimpoeru said he and his partner Dr Yasmine McEnroe had purchased the Deerings’ former home.

Their plan was to renovate the property, and to add another nurse and possibly a doctor to the village practice.

Dr Cimpoeru sought planning permission for the development in October last year after a number of previous applications were deemed invalid.

Further information was requested by the council’s planning section in November, which was supplied the following month.

Design statements supplied show the retention element relates to alterations to windows on the front, side and rear elevations, including a front-facing bay window.

Approval was granted with a total of 13 conditions attached.
