IFA's Brady seeks regional chair
IFA's Maurice Brady announced decision at final county AGM at Lavey Inn.
Current chair of County Cavan IFA Maurice Brady signalled his intention to run for the regional chair position later this year.
Mr Brady announced his decision as he chaired his fourth and final county AGM of the association at the Lavey Inn on Monday night.
“This is my last year as county chairman, and I hope I can make a contribution to IFA after my term is up. Therefore I want to let you all know that I will be putting my name forward to contest the Ulster, North Leinster regional chairman position later this year,” he told the strong attendance.
While the election is some months away, Mr Brady is currently the only name in the race.
The man Maurice Brady hopes to succeed as regional chair, Frank Brady, was amongst the attendance. The prominent pig farmer seemed to endorse Maurice Brady noting that Ulster North Leinster currently occupied six of the chairs at national level, the latest coming with the recent appointment of Cavan man Michael Caffrey to the pigs committee.
“When Maurice hopefully takes over in a year’s time, he can build that up to eight or nine,” Frank quipped. “I’d like to wish him the best of luck in the next year.
“It’s bittersweet for me because I really enjoyed this job and I know it’s coming to an end.”
Speaking from the floor, prominent IFA member Thomas Cooney wished him all the best in his campaign.
“It’s probably time we had a Cavan man back at the NOC - National Officers Committee - and the best of luck to you, and hopefully the county will be 110% behind you.”
Meanwhile locally all the commodity chairs were re-elected for another year.
Proud IFA man Sean Denning from the Billis branch was honoured to be elected as Cavan President for a five year term; as Elizabeth Tilson had completed her term as Cavan chair of the Farm Family committee, and Helen Clarke from the Crossdoney Branch was elected to succeed her.
Guest speaker on Monday night was IFA president Francie Gorman who discussed the latest on the Mercosur and Nitrates Directives while he was pushed strongly on the IFA’s approach to the ongoing TB debacle.
