Cavan finished ahead of the national curve as far as new car sales are concerned. Nationally, there was a slight decrease of one per cent of new cars registered last year (121,195).
Toyota remains the most popular make in the Breffni county with 275 units sold in 2024 or an almost 22% market share.
Meanwhile, the top model with Cavan motorists is still the Hyundai Tucson with 73 new cars registered in the county in 2024. Diesel is still the most popular engine type with Cavan motorists - with one in three new cars registered fuelled by diesel. This is followed by petrol electric (hybrid) on almost 28%, then petrol (26%) and electric (7%).
This different to the national picture overall where market share for 2024 seen petrol account for 30.31%, diesel 22.80%, hybrid 20.92%, and electric 14.41%. Petrol remains the most popular engine type for 2024, while Electric, Hybrid, and Plug-in Hybrid account for over 45% of the market between them.
Similar to the national picture, medium SUVs remain the most popular segment in the local market accounting for one in three cars sold. Hatchbacks are the favoured body type (433). Automatic transmissions are more popular for new car drivers in Cavan - by a ratio of almost two to one.
Grey is still the preferred colour of Cavan drivers (37%).
Brian Cooke, SIMI Director General, responding to the figures said that the market was in line with the previous year but he is calling on the government to increase supports to encourage motorists to make the switch to greener driving.
“The key feature of the 2024 new car market was the decline in Electric Vehicle sales, a reduction of 24% compared to 2023. There has however been some tentative signs of a turnaround in EV sales towards the end of 2024, and the industry is anticipating an increase in EV sales in 2025.
“The start of the new registration period, 251, this week, is an optimistic time for the Irish Motor Industry. With the variety of incentives and offers from retailers and manufacturers it is a good time for customers to shop for a new or used car.”
