€12.5M green budget for Cavan in 2025
THE environment and Cavan County Council’s Climate Action Plan are among a number of priorities in Budget 2025 allocations, which were announced during a meeting of members last month. A total of €12.5M has been allocated for measures in the year ahead compared with €10.5M in 2024.
With regard to the environment, nitrates regulations, wastewater treatment, planning, pollution and energy will be in focus this year. On the climate action front, Cavan County Council is set to execute its ambitious Climate Action Plan and will target emissions reduction, feasibility assessments, public engagement and community projects.
“These initiatives are essential to raise public awareness, foster community engagement and promote sustainable behaviour changes necessary for achieving our climate action goals,” added CE Eoin Doyle.
“The activities proposed for 2025 are those contained within the actions of the newly developed Climate Action Plan and will include workshops and community forums, public information campaigns, youth engagement initiatives, green business initiatives, and public events.”
Meanwhile, Cavan County Council is one of the first local authorities to take part in Coill na nÓg, a native tree and hedgerow planting initiative, which has now been rolled out in six primary schools and one secondary school locally.
Elsewhere, the anti-dumping initiative will continue in 2025 and will include the upgrading of the local authority’s Recycling Bring Centre network in Ballinagh and Ballyhaise. In 2024, abatement measures were undertaken at sites in Cockhill and Harmony Heights where just over 42 tonnes of waste were removed from the two sites.
And, Cavan County Council will continue to manage parking in 2025, an initiative it has been involved in since 2022. This also includes the management of the Cavan Town’s multi storey carpark, which remains closed for major construction renovation works. It is understood that the facility will reopen in May 2025.
