Breifne College students aim to make shopping more savvy

Smart Mart is a project whereby customers can go into a supermarket, scan a product and find all of the products in store.

The idea was created by three sixth year students from Breifne College; Diego Laricchio, Andrew Agnew and Noah Murphy.

Placed in the Technology section of the BT Young Scientist and technology Exhibition, their Smart Mart website is now live and aims to help consumers navigate their way through a store.

“It’s anything in the store, it’s generalised so if you typed in milk it would show you where milk is in the store,” Noah Murphy explained.

“After making the website itself we collected data from users about their experience and people seemed to find it very useful.”

“We got a lot of positive feedback,” Noah added, adding that reviews also showed it was a “good idea.”

“Customers enjoyed it, they thought that it helped speed up the process of shopping.”

Smart Mart can be used among savvy consumers in four stores across Cavan; Ballyhaise Pharmacy, Centra, O’Connors Hardware and Killarue Interiors.

“A lot of people just have busy lives,” said Andrew, describing why they decided to create the project.
