Fresh status orange warning issued for Cavan
A fresh status orange low temperature/ice warning has been issued for 13 counties including Cavan and Monaghan in the past hour.
As one just expired at 11am, the next one will kick back in at 7pm this evening until 8am tomorrow (Friday).
It will apply to counties Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Monaghan, Galway, Roscommon and Tipperary.
Met Éireann have said it will be "extremely cold with widespread severe frost and ice, along with lying snow in some areas". Patches of freezing fog are also forecast.
The national weather forecaster says it will result in:
• Dangerous travelling conditions on roads and underfoot
• Travel disruption and delays
• Animal welfare issues
• Poor visibility
Meanwhile, it will remain very cold today with frost and ice lingering. Most places will be dry with sunny spells but there will be scattered showers in the north and west, some of sleet or snow. Highest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees with light, variable winds.
Very cold again tonight with widespread frost and ice or black ice. Lowest temperatures of -7 to -2 degrees.
Tomorrow (Friday) is expected very cold across most of the country with widespread frost and ice or black ice. Cloud and rain in the southwest will slowly move northeast across the country through the day, turning to sleet or snow on high ground. It will stay dry in Ulster and northeast Leinster however. Highest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees generally but not as cold in the southwest. Moderate to fresh east to southeast winds will develop.
