Driver clocked speeding at over 200km an hour on N55 over Christmas

Approximately 13,573 drivers were detected for speeding offences by An Garda Síochána throughout the Christmas period.

The campaign began on Friday, November 29, and lasted until Monday, January 6. There where three occurances of speeding in Cavan among the remarkable speeds recorded during this time.

The highest speeding offence recorded in the county during the period was 202km/hr recorded in a 100km/hr zone on the N55 in Kilcogy. Another driver was detected driving at 101km/hr in a 50km/hr zone on the N3 in Virginia. Meanwhile, in Drung, a motorist was detected driving at a speed of 141km/hr in a 60km/hr zone on the R188.

Approximately 2,636 vehicles were seized by gardaí nationally for a range of offences under the Road Traffic Act, 1961.

In addition, approximately 1,311 Fixed Charge Penalty Notices were issued for the offence of using a mobile phone while driving.

Sadly, 174 people lost their lives in road traffic collisions on Irish roads in 2024 including three in County Cavan. Two people have already lost their lives on roads nationally in 2025. A garda spokesperson said: “An Garda Síochána is appealing to all those who will be taking to the roads over the New Year period and as people return to home and to work at the end of the week and early next week to slow down, take extra care and to give your driving your full attention.”
