Review of the Year - March

Belturbet bomb break through

THE Director of Public Prosecutions will be asked to consider if there is enough evidence to charge an individual or individuals in relation to the Belturbet bombing over 50 years ago. The Anglo-Celt can exclusively reveal that, following an extensive cold case review, a file is now being prepared for the DPP. The break-through marks the closest point to which a prosecution could arise in the devastating 51-year wake of the attack.

Tara to run NY half marathon for Cuan

ONE step at a time is how Tara Doonan intends to complete the 21 kilometres of New York City’s Half Marathon this coming St Patrick’s Day in aid of Cuan Cancer care. It’s remarkably similar to how the Cavan woman approached her recent diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Tara finished her cancer treatment last November.

“This is the longest time I’ve been out of hospitals in nearly two years. I’m delighted to be this side of it all.” A secondary school PE teacher in Carrigallen, Tara (37) first learned she had breast cancer in August 2022.

Ireland’s oldest citizen (108) passes away

TRIBUTES were paid to Cavan and Ireland’s oldest citizen, Bridget Tierney, who passed away in her 109th year. The remarkable Bridget Tierney (nee Reilly) from Loughduff lived through two world wars and three pandemics. Her relatives described her as the “heart” of their family and said they were proud of the legacy she left behind.

The Well runs dry

IT’S the end of an era at the Well Bar in Bridge Street this week as ‘the home away from home’ for many people over the last three decades, is no longer.

Dominic and Gabrielle Cadden closed the doors on the public house in March as their tenure as owners and landlords of the establishment came to an end.

“I enjoyed every moment of it and made some great friends along the way,” said an emotional Dominic.

Drug dealers making a killing

THE rise in cocaine use on both sides of the border has driven prices upwards, with dealers now charging 25% more than they did four months ago. Meanwhile, supercharged cannabis, “a good deal stronger” than that sold previously, is leading to addiction and “real difficulty” around psychotic incidents.

Speaking at a major cross border policing conference in Cavan Garda Commissioner Drew Harris admitted it was “nearly impossible” to say just how much drugs are coming into the island of Ireland, stating that organised crime groups see Ireland as “affluent and a wealthy place” to target.

New drugs unit imminent

THE establishment of new and dedicated garda drug units for both Cavan and Monaghan was “imminent”. Interviews were completed just before the new year and, arising from those, two units would be set up - one for each county - comprising of one sergeant and four gardaí.

Ulster says: No No

The government brought two referendums to the people, and both were rejected. Almost four out of every five voters in Cavan Monaghan voted down the proposed constitutional amendments on family (78.08%) and care (81.24%).

Lakelands further expand

LAKELAND Dairies acquired Belgian-based butterfat business De Brandt Dairy International NV with the promise of “significantly” increasing the co-op’s value add capability.
