Growing rate of new homes started in Cavan

The number of new homes commenced in Cavan this year is on target to be more than double the number started in 2023.

The latest data issued by the Department of Housing and Local Government show that there were 475 filed to the local authority in Cavan from January to the end of October 2024. It compares to 249 for the Breffni county in all of 2023.

The large jump is being attributed largely to the development levy waiver, which will remain in place until the end of this year. The introduction of the waiver earlier this year saw a large jump in commencement notices with 268 filed in Cavan for April 2023 alone.

In April 2023, the Government introduced a temporary waiver of 'section 48' development contributions and the refunding of Uisce Éireann water and waste water connection charges in a move to reduce housing construction costs and boost supply.

The schemes applied for one year to all permitted residential developments that commenced on site between April 25, 2023 and April 24, 2024; and were completed not later than December 31, 2025.

Nationally, there were 53,256 homes commenced in first ten months of 2024, according to the monthly data published for residential starts.

There were 4,249 homes commenced across the country in October 2024.

Of all homes commenced in the first ten months of 2024 (Jan-Oct), 37% were in the four Dublin local authorities. By local authority, the most homes commenced this year so far have been in Dublin City (6,655) followed by Fingal (5,368) and South Dublin (4,469). The lowest number of homes commenced have been in Leitrim (91), Carlow (197) and Longford (243).
