CMETB Confirmed as patron for new Special School in Monaghan

The new school is to be established in Castleblayney.

The Department of Education have formally requested that Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB) act as the patron body for a new special school in County Monaghan.

The new school is to be established in Castleblayney, with patronage agreed at the December meeting of the ETB Board.

In October, Minister Heather Humphreys announced plans for the school, which is set to open next year. This will be the first dedicated special school in the county, catering for children and young people with complex special educational needs up to the age of 18.

CMETB is delighted to undertake the role of patron body, furthering its commitment to inclusive education and supporting the diverse needs of students across the region. Dr. Fiona McGrath, Chief Executive of CMETB, welcomed the announcement, stating:

“The establishment of a new special school in County Monaghan marks a significant and positive milestone for education in the region. This vital project reflects CMETB’s commitment to fostering high-quality and inclusive learning environments for all students. CMETB is dedicated to ensuring the successful delivery of this school, and we look forward to working with the Department of Education, the National Council for Special Education (NCSE), and all stakeholders to bring this important vision to life for the community of County Monaghan.”

While the Department of Education works to finalise the school’s exact location, the NCSE has already commenced assessing the needs of the area to determine the specific requirements for the new school, in order to plan relevant supports for students and families in County Monaghan.

Detailed planning will be undertaken by CMETB with the Department of Education in the areas of enrolment, policy development, resource allocation, staff recruitment and infrastructure. The new school is expected to open by September 2025.

Welcome

Fianna Fáil TD Niamh Smyth has welcomed confirmation from her party colleague and Minister for Education Norma Foley that a location for a special school has been identified in Castleblaney.

Deputy Smyth said, "I understand that Cavan-Monaghan ETB will take the lead in delivering this new special education school which is expected to be fully operational by September 2025.

"As someone who has long campaigned for this to be delivered, I am delighted to see that the National Council for Special Education are in Monaghan Education Centre today (Tuesday 10th Dec) and tomorrow (Wednesday 11th) to meet with parents from right across the county to get an understanding of what the needs of their children are in order to determine what the demand is likely to be and the needs of children that must be met. This demonstrates the willingness and the pace of the Department to ensure a prompt delivery of this much needed special school.

"I will continue to work with the parents of SNAP (Special Needs Active Parents) which is chaired by Paddy McAloon and Dr Fiona McGrath Chief Executive at Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board to ensure this facility is delivered without delay."
