Council continues to explore E-scooter rental scheme

Cavan County Council has “spoken with a number” of prospective suppliers and other towns where electric scooters and e-bikes rental schemes have been successfully implemented with the hope of rolling them out in Cavan Town.

It follows the publication of a new set of regulations earlier this year, legislating that e-scooters can be legally used on public roads only if they meet the technical and usage requirements for the category.

That includes rules that users must be aged 16 years or older; must not carry passengers or goods; and obey a speed limit of 20 kilometres per hour.

Powerful e-mopeds may need vehicle registration and, in some cases, users may require a valid licence and insurance.

At present, however, a council spokesperson said the local authority is occupied with delivering the “physical infrastructure” necessary to facilitate such a scheme.

“We will continue to deliver the physical infrastructure to ensure the success of such a scheme when it is implemented.”
