Ballyconnell shows stiff competition between SF and FF

Over 600 votes were cast at Ballyconnell Central NS, according to tallies, with Fianna Fail’s Deputy Smith and Sinn Fein’s Deputy Tully emerging as the biggest beneficiaries.

Deputy Tully came out on top with 165 first preferences tallied, and Deputy Smith closely behind with 161 votes.

The race between the two is neck and neck, with Deputy Smith in third followed by Deputy Tully in fourth.

Fianna Fail's Robbie Gallagher is in fifth, with Niamh Smyth in sixth.

What the tallies show is how strong Sinn Fein's vote getting ability has been in this constituency, with almost one in three people backing the party.

Meanwhile Fine Gael’s Cllr TP O’Reilly gathered decent double figures votes, with Cllr Carmel Brady just behind that. In 2020 the party ran Sandra McIntyre, a native of Bawnboy. This time round no party ran a candidate further west than Cavan Town.

Aontú's councillor Sarah O’Reilly polled well in the area too from the two booths tallied, while Shane P O’Reilly was the next biggest winner.
