HOME ENERGY SAVING: New programme launched for schools

Retrofit Ready is pleased to announce a new energy savings programme for students in post-primary schools. The programme is designed to promote energy saving awareness for students. This programme is supported by Cavan County Local Development and Monaghan Integrated Development.

During the Winter and Spring time, Retrofit Ready will attend schools and colleges in Cavan and Monaghan to promote how young people can become more energy efficient at home, work and play.

A specially designed PowerPoint presentation has been prepared with easy-to-read graphics and simplistic dialogue for easy learning. There will be a light-hearted approach to the presentation, but, it is most educational. A colourful poster will also be available to students at all these presentations.

It is important explain the concept of energy saving, starting with the basics, what it is and why it matters most. Discuss its impact on the environment, economy, comfort and energy bills savings. Discuss how energy efficiency is, particularly relevant in Ireland, including the country's energy sources and climate goals.

It is really difficult to know, nowadays, exactly how much our youth know about energy saving or energy efficiency. Most don’t have energy bills to pay or the knowledge on small changes that can improve the efficiency of their place of residence or schools.

There are many aspects of energy learning during the educational sessions in schools, with these normally supervised by school staff in conjunction with Retrofit Ready. Activities/slides will demonstrate energy consumption, such as using energy meters to measure the power usage of appliances.

The introduction of a simple quiz on energy use will get students focused and leave them thinking about likely answers and the accuracy of their answers. Comparing results is always interesting and entertaining.

Students will be informed during the session about energy-efficient appliances and encourage them to turn off lights and devices when not in use. Discuss the importance of properly using heating systems and insulating homes. Provide tips on how to regulate heating efficiently.

Shower/bath usage is also part of the programme. How to make best use of windows at home and in school, Discuss the role of smart thermostats, LED lighting, and energy-efficient appliances in reducing energy consumption.

The schools programme will have a dual purpose. While educating students, information packs will be available for students to take home to their parents/guardian containing literature on home improvements and the SEAI grants that are available for all works carried out.

Schools who wish to participate in this programme in this programme can contact Retrofit Ready, part of Cavan County Local Development and Monaghan Integrated Development on 087-1315964 or omcconnon@ccld.ie
