Old footage and photos of Bailieborough sought
Documentary maker Frank Shouldice returns to Bailieborough for another Cavan story with a difference. His film The Man Who Wanted To Fly about Dromore brothers Bobby and Ernie Coote, charmed audiences at home and abroad, picking up 27 international awards. For the past three years he has been working on his new film. Provisionally titled ‘All We Once Knew’ it traces the life and times of four-piece band The Sons of Southern Ulster.
Justin Kelly, David Meagher, Paddy Glackin and the late Noel Larkin first formed as The Panic Merchants in Bailieborough in the mid-1980s. After breaking up in the late 1990s the band reformed as The Sons of Southern Ulster more than 20 years later.
In researching his new documentary Frank is now asking anybody who might have archive film and photos from the town to get in touch.
“The band started out in Bailieborough and now write songs about growing up back then. We wondered if anybody has their own Super 8 film from the 1970s and 1980s in Bailiborough - or evocative photos of various landmarks and town life. The band’s songs include references to places like The Hideout, The Oasis nightclub, the long-gone Pop Inn chipper, Westend Bar, the Foundry and the shoe factory. Old photos from these locations would really help us take the film where it needs to go,” says the director. If anyone can help, the film makers can be reached by email at frankievale21@gmail.com
