Over €30k raised at Gallant Challenge

The 19th annual Gallant Challenge has raised over €30,000 so far, with donations still coming in.

The walk or run event which took place last Saturday, October 26, saw over 150 participants complete a five or 10 kilometre route around Cornafean.

“We had a great day, it was a great crowd,” said the challenges driving force Ciaran Weir.

Family members of the late Oliver Brennan from Cortober donated a cup for the first male back from the 10km run, which went to Barry McKiernan, a nephew of renowned runner Catherina McKieranan from Cornafean.

“He did it in super time,” Ciaran praised.

A cup in honour of the late Mary Comiskey from Kilnaleck was awarded to Caroline Crowe from Cavan, the first female across the finish line.

Funds raised will go to St Christopher’s Hospice on the outskirts of Cavan Town, which is developing to a 16-bed specialist hospice facility. The joint project between the St Christopher’s Hospice and the HSE, was granted planning permission last year, involves significant financial and asset contributions by both parties.

It is expected to be completed by early 2026.

Significant levels of funding are also being raised in the community through fund-raisers like the Gallant Challenge.

Ciaran praised “the generosity of the people of Cavan again and all the people that sponsored.

“I’d just really like to thank people,” he concluded.
