Average Safety Cameras now operational in Cavan

Average Safety Cameras along the N3 in Cavan went live on Friday, October 25 at midday.

The cameras have been installed between Kilduff and Billis and operate in both directions.

Those found exceeding the designated speed limit to face fixed charge penalty notice fine of €160 and three penalty points.

Commissioning, testing, and validation of the cameras got underway earlier this month.

Speaking at the Fine Gael convention in the Hotel Kilmore last Friday night, Minister Helen McEntee stated the cameras are about “changing people’s behaviours.”

With around 30% of deaths on Irish roads related to speed, Minister McEntee commented that “over the last two years in particular” there has been an increase in road deaths, fatalities and serious accidents.

“We’re doing everything we can to reverse that trend,” she said, adding that technology will play a “key part” in doing so.

Speaking on Average Speed Cameras around the country, for example the Port tunnel and the M7, she said there has been “between 98 and 96% compliance”.

“People slow down, they know that they’re going to be caught if they go over the speed limit.

“The whole point here is that we roll out as many speed cameras as possible, average speed cameras as well as static cameras,” she added.

Minister McEntee said this particular locations was chosen due to “an increase in accidents”.

“We’re really targeting the areas where it’s been problematic.”

Drivers detected travelling from point A to point B too quickly, are issued with a Fixed Charge Notice which, when processed, assigns three penalty points to the driver’s licence and a fine of €160, or €240 if not paid within 28 days.
