FASHION & LIFESTYLE: Crafting a niche business

Crafts of Ireland was established in 2018 and is a family-run business that is spearheaded by husband and wife team, Alan and Sandra Coote. Their son’s partner, Rachael Sheridan, also recently joined the set-up, which is quintessentially a small rural Irish enterprise going from strength to strength since its inception six years ago. Crafts of Ireland nestles majestically on a sixth generation family farm in south Cavan that overlooks the Loughcrew Hills and Mullaghmeen. On a good day, the family can see counties Westmeath and Longford from their home.

The business is focused on heritage and wool crafts, and also on sustainability.

Sandra says that the majority of wool used is sourced from the family’s Roscommon sheep flock - a rare breed that was once considered to be extinct here. The couple are also part of a national group of breeders that is endeavouring to re-establish the breed and have it recognised as native.

Flax is also grown on the farm; this results in the production of linen - something that was identified as part of the enterprise from the 1921 Census.

“The family were growing flax and making linen and we are trying to keep this up,” says Sandra.

“We grow a small patch of flax and all the original antique equipment including a spinning wheel are used to process the flax. The equipment goes as far back as the 17th and 18th centuries.”

Elsewhere, there is also focus on needle felting - a creative craft that involves sculpting shapes and figures using wool and special felting needles. There are also workshops on the farm for people who wish to engage in the craft.Sandra who has been working in arts and crafts for most of her life says it’s a “privilege” to have been nominated and shortlisted in the final of the Fashion/Lifestyle category of this year’s Business Awards. “All of this adds credibility to the business and customers love to see awards on walls. It’s important to put yourself out there.”
