BEST EMERGING NEW BUSINESS: Your funeral service your way

Co-founder of My Farewell Wishes Colm Kieran urged people to share their wishes for proceedings after they pass away.

A funeral plan is an easy way to organise your funeral arrangements in advance, meaning you can specify your wishes for family and loved ones. The Kingscourt-based business gives people peace of mind knowing that their wishes will be taken care of.

Colm introduced himself as a “scary funeral director” to the crowd gathered at the pitch night of The Anglo-Celt Business and Tourism awards.

The comment drew laughter from the crowd, as Colm stood before them with a large smile on his face, not at all looking like the description of himself.

My Farewell Wishes is a service that supports funeral directors all across the country “and hopefully beyond".

The team has set up a platform, which provides pre-planning services, services at the time of funerals and services after funerals, which help local funeral directors support families “from that starting process right through to the end". People can share their wishes with family, to cut the stress and confusion on loved ones when they pass away.

They provide their services using technology and a human touch, with their main business currently in pre-planning.

“We pre-plan with the local funeral director,” explained Colm.

He then asked some important questions of the audience - who would like to be buried or cremated? Who would not like to have a religious ceremony? Who would not like to have a wake and would like a closed coffin, meaning nobody would be looking at them?

He urged people to go home and tell their family what wishes they have when they pass away.

“It’s a very important thing, it cuts out stress, hassle, confusion and arguments.

“Unless you tell somebody [your wishes], that’s not going to happen, we see it all the time.

“My advice is to tell a family member,” he urged, adding that this can be done through their service in 80 locations across Ireland.

“Through your local funeral director, through a digital platform you can decide what your wishes are, share them with family members.

“Make sure that it’s your wishes and it’s your way,” he said.
