Cowen urges EU action on housing
Irish MEP wants Review of State Aid Rules.
Fianna Fáil MEP Barry Cowen delivered an important address to the European Parliament this week, calling for a more comprehensive and targeted approach to tackling Europe’s housing crisis.
Highlighting the ongoing challenges across the continent, he advocated for the establishment of a dedicated EU committee to address housing issues with greater focus and coordination.
During his speech, the North West Midlands representative emphasised the scale of the housing crisis, noting that many European governments, including Ireland, continue to face significant challenges in ensuring affordable housing for all citizens. However, the Irish MEP also pointed out that substantial progress has been made in Ireland, particularly in recent years.
“In Ireland, we have increased housing output, improved access for first-time buyers, removed unnecessary regulatory barriers, fast-tracked some but not all planning delays, and mobilized state lands for affordable and social housing. These are important steps forward.” said Cowen.
One of the key points raised by Cowen during the debate was the need for an urgent review of the EU's State aid rules. He argued that these rules must be more flexible to enable Member States to address housing emergencies without unnecessary restrictions.
“Our shared goal of delivering decent, affordable housing for all citizens, requires continued flexibility and support at almost every level, including this one,” Cowen stated.
