Four charged over goods stolen in Cavan

Operation Táirge part of national initiative combatting organised retail crime.

Gardaí at Carrick on Shannon arrested four people under Operation Táirge in connection with the them of items from various retail outlets in Cavan Town

The arrests of members of a gang believed to have originated in Dublin occurred on Tuesday last in the Leitrim county town.

They are suspected of travelling northwards before hitting rural retailers for goods that can be sold on elsewhere.

Operation Táirge is part of a national garda initiative aimed at combatting organised retail crime.

“On Tuesday we received a call about an attempted theft that had occurred in a local retail unit. As part of our response, we stopped and searched a van in Dromod.”

A short time after gardaí received a call about an incident of attempted theft at a local retailer.

“The four people travelling in the van were arrested and a large amount of stolen property was recovered.

“It's believed that this organised retail crime gang set off from Dublin and that the recovered property had been stolen earlier that day from various retail outlets in Cavan town.”

The two males and two females ranging in age from 23 to 33 years were interviewed by Gardaí in Carrick on Shannon, Ballymote and Sligo Garda Stations.

“All four people have now been charged and are before the courts,” gardaí confirmed.
