Cycling for a good cause

A local cycling club has raised much needed funds for Cuan Cancer Support, Crocus Cancer Support Centre and The Holy Family School Parents Association.

DB Cycling Club made a cheque presentation of €1,500 to each charity last month.

Over 130 cyclists participated in the Annual Charity Cycle, which took place in July.

“We run this every year and we run it for different charities,” said club secretary, Patsy Smith, estimating they have given around €30,000 to different charities through the years.

“It’s just something that was started a way back a long time ago, when they started up they decided to help various local charities and local people in need.

“Any money that was generated on the day through donations and the entry fees was all gathered. We’ve raised funds for numerous charities throughout the years.”

On the day, a 50km cycle and a 100km took place, the club was delighted with the support people showed to the fundraiser.

“It was [a good turnout] given that it was a wet day.”

Patsy, who is a retired runner, participated in the 50km cycle.

“Up to eight years ago I would have been a runner,” he said, adding that he sustained injuries and has undergone three knee operations for torn cartilage. “I took up the cycling and I enjoy the cycling.”

The Cootehill man thanked everybody who sponsored, participated or helped out on the day of the cycle. Those wishing to join DB Cycling Club can contact them via their Facebook page.

“We cater for all abilities,” he encouraged.
