Leaving on a high note
Multisound Cavan will open for business for the last time this Saturday, September 28.
“That’s our final trading day,” revealed Noel Tierney, standing behind the counter of his beloved music shop.
A ‘Farewell to Multisound’ concert was held in the shop’s honour last Saturday, when various musicians filled the streets with music, dancing and laughter as a way of thanking Noel for all the music and his service to the people.
“The weekend was very good, there were a lot of good artists and the weather held up well and most people seemed to really enjoy the day.”
Noel reported that there was a “really good” turnout for the concert.
“We were very busy in the shop, a lot of people seemed to make their final purchase from Multisound.
“I was amazed at how many people turned up,” he shared.
The Ballyhaise man said he was “reminded” by “various people” of Multisound’s place in the town and in people's lives throughout the 36 years of the shop’s existence. Many people recalled purchasing tickets in anticipation for their favorite concert or gig.
“It was constantly on my mind as people recalled happy memories they have of the shop.”
As we spoke, with the tune of country music in the background, one customer came in to thank Noel for his services down through the years. In turn, Noel thanked the man for his custom. The short exchange was heartfelt and personal, wishing Noel well in his future. “I will certainly miss being in Cavan Town and trading in Multisound because it’s always an interesting way to spend your days.
“You’re meeting pretty interesting and fun-loving people most of the time.”
Noel came to the decision to close the shop due to changing retail habits and how people access and listen to music today. Aside from a revival in record sales, Noel previously told this newspaper that Ticketmaster’s decision to withdraw support since Covid had a “detrimental” impact on footfall to independent music stores. He thanked the people of Cavan who supported him down through the years, with a special note of thanks to Kevin Meehan and all who organised the weekend’s event.
“I would just like to thank all the people who organised this event,” he said.
