Cavan to host Aontú's inaugural party think-in

Cllr O 'Reilly stood for Aontú in the 2019 General Election.

Cavan has been chosen as the location for the inaugural Aontú party ‘Think In’, with delegates set to meet at the Hotel Kilmore on Saturday, September 14.

The decision for Cavan to host upcoming party event has been welcomed by local party representative at Cavan County Councillor Sarah O’ Reilly.

Back in June Cllr O 'Reilly once again topped the poll in the Bailieborough-Cootehill electoral area, repeating the feat she achieved in 2019, whilst increasing her first preference tally by 66 votes.

Co-opted in 2016, two years later she resigned her Fianna Fáil membership, and stood as Cathaoirelach of Chair of Cavan County Council in 2020.

She stood for Aontú in the 2019 General Election, and in July the party selected her at convention to stand at any future contest.

“I am delighted that my party has chosen Cavan for its first ever’ Think In’,” said Cllr O'Reilly. “We are a movement for real change, real accountability and real action. Our party leader, Deputy Peadar Tóibín is one of the hardest working politicians in this country but what sets him apart is his courage and his conviction. He genuinely has the interests of the people at heart.”

Cllr O'Reilly said that Aontú is the “only party” acting like a real opposition to government. “We have seen the so-called opposition in action, and they all supported the Government’s reckless Family and Care Referenda, only rowing back when the electorate roundly defeated them.

“To think that a Minister actually withheld crucial information on the major repercussions of the Referenda, as Roderick O' Gorman, did is quite incredible. What is even more so is that our so called opposition has been quite content to let the issue slide. This Minister has not faced any sanctions whatsoever. What other issues are the opposition letting slide.”

She continued by saying that a “bad Government is being allowed to get away with so much” and that main opposition parties are simply “not shouting stop”.

“Populism is more important to them than principles and the public. The awful reality of 14,000 being homeless in a country that is awash with money is almost becoming normal. Well, it is anything but normal and speaks to a Government that is clearly not working for the people. A person wouldn’t need to be particularly great at figures to know that something is not adding up.”
