Family fun at Mullagh Fair Day

All is all set and ready for Mullagh Fair Day this Sunday (September 8) and, so far, the weather looks promising.

Chairperson of Mullagh Tourism and Community Development, Cllr Shane P. O’Reilly, promised a “fantastic day out for all the family” in Mullagh this weekend.

“There’s stuff for everybody, from young to old and the not so old, whether you’re nine or you’re 99 you’ll have plenty of stuff to do in Mullagh.”

First up, he outlined what spectators can expect on the day. “We have livestock of all shapes, sizes and descriptions,” he said, adding that there will be a display of highland cows, other mixed cow breeds, horses, “award winning” Texel sheep and alpacas.

“There’s a big array,” he said of the livestock display, adding that there will also be a dog show with registration at the Fairgreen starting from 12:30pm.

Secondly, he announced that the Rural Olympics will make their debut at the fair.

“We’re having the Rural Olympics so there will be potato picking, turf footing, wellie throwing and cow milking,” he laughed.

“We’ll have rural olympians now in Mullagh.”

Costing €5 to participate, whoever completes the four challenges in the quickest time will win a sponsored prize of €100.

The day will also host a funfair, trampolines and free games for children with laughter galore and hours of entertainment promised. For those feeling a little peckish or looking to try something local, there will be an artisan food fair and an abundance of other stalls to explore and pick up a bargain.

The Kings of Country will also appear live, comprising country singing legends Matt Leavy, Paul Leavy and Eddie Quinn. Martin Donohoe and Friends will perform traditional Irish music and songs with Cavan Comhaltas also performing on the day.

Renowned storyteller Daniel Downey will share some of his stories of ancient tales, fantasy, truth and more, sure to bring a smile and laughter to the day.

There will be further music and entertainment from country music singer Kelan Browne. The 20-year-old Donegal lad will return to Mullagh Fair with his band this year. He proved a big hit with the crowd last year. He will be on stage from 3-5pm. Speaking about the fair on a video posted to social media, Browne described last year’s event as a “fantastic, fantastic day”.

“It’s great to be coming back this year,” the Ballybofey native told his social media followers.

“It’s a really really great day out so we hope to see as many of you out there as you can.”

The Mullagh Fair will begin at noon on Sunday and will finish at around 6pm.

Cllr O’Reilly thanked all of the sponsors who helped in making the event happen. For more details, consult the Mullagh Fair Day Facebook page.
