Killeshandra to host 13th annual ‘Loop the Lakes’

The 13th annual 'Loop the Lakes' charity run will take place in Killeshandra this Saturday, September 7, with funds raised in aid of SOSAD Ireland, Focus Resource Centre and Cavan Autism Parents Support (CAPS) group.

Started in 2012 to raise awareness around suicide prevention and mental health supports in the local area, once again the volunteer-led event has received the backing of local businesses and the wider community.

“You couldn't say enough good things really,” says member of the Loop the Lakes organising committee, Ciaran Burns.

He thanks the event's primary sponsor - Gerry, Brenda and all the team at Ice Cream Treats - as well as all the other associated sponsors, without whose support the run would not be able to take place.

“It's been amazing. Every year we have businesses giving their support, and then the families that take part as well. It's a wonderfully fun day out.”

Ciaran believes Killeshandra is perfectly positioned to host big events such as the Loop the Lakes with its myriad of carefully appointed and well-maintained tracks around what is some of the finest and most picturesque scenery in all of the county.

He credits the opening of the Camino walk as playing a critical role in bringing walks in and around the lakeside town to the wider consciousness and says: “It makes for a brilliant event. It does lend itself. Generally the weather comes good for us, touch wood, and it really is a wonderful community event.”

The Loop the Lakes' route is either 3.5 or 7km in length, and starts at 12 noon, with registration online via the 'Killeshandra Leaguers GAA' Clubspot app page beforehand or at Killeshandra Community Centre on the day from 10:30am.

All those who registered will be entered into a raffle for cash prizes of up to €500.

Entry is €20 for adults, €10 for U16s, and €40 for a family of four. Ciaran credits the committee's chosen charities as doing “fantastic work” in the community for those requiring their services.

“It's all about fun. The Camino has been a wonderful addition to the town in recent years, and we're now heading for our 13th year. With that scenery why wouldn't we put on events like this?! It's great to see people getting out, coming together, and enjoying themselves as a community.”
