Cathaoirleach hails enterprising Kingscourt students’ RUST bin project
A team of six students from Coláiste Dún an Rí Kingscourt, whose invention of an AI-powered waste-sorting bin won a gold medal at an international student entrepreneurship competition in Tokyo recently, have been hailed by Cathaoirleach, Cllr T.P. O’Reilly as heralding a bright economic future for the county.
The students, Alanna Corcoran Cusack, Krzysztof Kazimierczak, Danny Whelan, Max McEvoy, Harry McEvoy, and Darragh Shields created a RUST (Rubbish, Utilisation, Sorting Technology) bin, which sorts waste materials with the use of AI to decrease the amount of unrecycled waste in Ireland.
Their project not only demonstrates their ingenuity but also their commitment to creating a sustainable future. The six student innovators were selected to represent Ireland at the prestigious Student Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE) World Cup in Tokyo, Japan, which took place from August 25-29.
Cavan County Council’s Environmental Services section provided funding supports towards the initiative, which is closely aligned with the strategic objectives of the Council’s Climate Action Plan.
Susan Doherty, Cavan County Council’s Environmental Services section, visited the students in advance of their departure to wish them good luck, offer them congratulations on being selected to represent Ireland, and thank them for their commitment to reducing un-recycled waste in society.
Congratulating the students on their gold medal success, Cathaoirleach, Cllr O’Reilly said, “I am in awe of the creativity, technical ability, and business nous of these impressive young men and women. To come up with such a clever idea is noteworthy in its own right, but to go toe to toe with the world’s best student innovators and emerge victorious is an incredible achievement. My congratulations go to all six students, and to their parents and teachers who have no doubt provided great guidance. With such talented young entrepreneurs, the economic future of County Cavan is in safe hands.”
